City of Fort Myers Golf Cart Study

October 22, 2011 · Transit / Pedestrian / Bicycle Planning

DPA assisted the city of Fort Myers in the preparation of a study evaluating the potential to use golf carts on some city streets and in some areas of the city.  The initial evaluation focused on a pilot program area.  The 2011 study included an opinion survey of area residents; an evaluation of where the use of golf carts would be appropriate; and the formulation of specific conditions for the use of golf carts on city streets.  The study also included a review of Florida statutes in regards to golf cart usage of public roadways, sidewalks and crossing of public roadways and a literature review (via the internet) of golf cart usage of public roadways in other communities.  The formulation of policies and conditions for registration and inspection of golf carts, the cost of implementing a golf cart program, appropriate signage, and measures to evaluate the use of golf carts in other parts of the city were also included in the study.
