Corkscrew Road Traffic Operations Assessment

September 26, 2011 · Traffic Operations

Traffic operational problems have been experienced on Corkscrew Road, adjacent to the Miromar Outlets, for many years.  As the traffic consultant to the Miromar Outlets, an existing factory outlets retail center in South Lee County, DPA conducted a traffic operations assessment of Corkscrew Road to assess traffic operations from Three Oaks Parkway to Ben Hill Griffin Parkway.  The purpose of the assessment was to evaluate various access management scenarios for the Miromar Outlets and recommend improvements that could alleviate the operational problems and enhance the performance of Corkscrew Road.

The arterial analysis was conducted for five alternative access management scenarios and  measures of effectiveness evaluated and compared.  The analysis resulted in the implementation of significant improvements to Corkscrew Road including: converting the single left-turn lane directional median opening to a dual left-turn lane directional opening under signal control; adding a third westbound thru lane; improvements to the Corkscrew Road intersection at Ben Hill Griffin Parkway; and access and parking improvements internal to the Miromar Outlets.  The improvements have resulted in significant benefits to the traffic operations of Corkscrew Road and the Miromar Outlets.
