HEFT / NW 12 Street Interchange PD&E Study
April 3, 2011 · Transportation PlanningA new interchange located on the Homestead Extension of the Florida Turnpike (HEFT) at NW 12 Street was proposed by Beacon Tradeport, a major development that included a mix of warehouses, office space, hotel and retail.
DPA, in coordination with the Florida Turnpike Enterprise (FTE), conducted a Project Development & Environmental (PD&E) Study for the new interchange. The study included an interchange to be designed and constructed in two phases. Phase I provided a Parclo A-B interchange. Ramps, providing movements to the north and from the south, were located in the northeast quadrant of the interchange. Additional ramps, providing movements to the south and from the north, were located in the northwest quadrant.
Phase II of the project included the construction of a collector-distributor (C/D) road system parallel to the HEFT mainline, which would connect to the entrance / exit ramps to and from NW 12 Street. One of the functions of the C/D road system was to remove the lane-changing maneuvers from the mainline, thereby increasing driver safety, maximizing the interchange useful life, and adding capacity through the use of a Type B weaving section. The proposed interchange alignment was designed to minimize right-of-way acquisition costs, drainage impacts, and environmental impacts.
