Indirect Left Turns Study

May 3, 2011 · Traffic Operations

The Miami-Dade MPO commissioned DPA to conduct a comprehensive study of “Indirect Left Turn” treatments throughout Miami-Dade County.  The objective of the study was to identify techniques suitable for use, as well as to recommend locations where these solutions could be implemented.

Various techniques were researched, ranked, and rated to evaluate their applicability and effectiveness.  Two of these techniques were found to be effective in Miami-Dade and 18 potential locations identified.  Field reviews were conducted to select the two best candidates for detailed analysis, recommendations, and conceptual design.

Both locations exhibited severe congestion.  In both cases, extending the left turn lanes was not feasible. Existing and proposed traffic operations were evaluated at both locations using a traffic simulation model.  The evaluation confirmed that the recommended improvement would significantly reduce delays at the main intersection while maintaining adequate operations throughout the affected roadway network.
