Opa-Locka Airport Safety and Operations Improvements
October 25, 2011 · Site Civil EngineeringThe Miami-Dade Aviation Department (MDAD) received federal funds from the disposition of airport property for the Gratigny Parkway Road project in Opa-Locka. MDAD identified the need for additional high mast apron lighting and static ground rods in the aprons to provide an improved level of safety, as well as enhance the airport operations by improving security. Due to this need and available funding, construction contract documents were prepared to achieve the desired levels of safety and security throughout the Opa-Locka Airport.
The design plans and construction contract documents, prepared by DPA, included the following design elements.
- 70-foot mounting height poles with multi 1,000 watt high pressure sodium luminaries.
- Drilled caisson foundations more than 15-foot deep.
- Electrical distribution of 480 volts throughout the airport including, under taxiways, aprons, service roads and secured areas.
- Copper clad grounding rods with conductors between them throughout the airport apron areas.
The project included the design, permitting, contract bid preparation, bid award analysis, and recommendations to MDAD.
