US-1 ADA Transition Plan for the US-1 Corridor

April 3, 2011 · Transit / Pedestrian / Bicycle Planning

DPA was retained by the FDOT to evaluate the ADA deficiencies on US-1 and the adjacent busway from Datran Boulevard to SW 344 Street in Miami-Dade County. The study identified and documented the existing deficiencies found on this segment of US-1, as they related to the Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG).  The study also quantified the different deficiencies and recommended priorities for upgrading US-1 to ADA compliance.  Over a hundred intersections and more than 40 miles of sidewalks along US-1 and the busway were assessed to determine pedestrian deficient elements.  These deficiencies included sidewalks, bus stops, crosswalks, pedestrian signals, pedestrian ramps and other features related to the safe movement of pedestrians along and across the US-1 corridor.  This project served as the pilot phase of a FDOT District-wide Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Transition Plan.  Recommended improvements were implemented by the FDOT, by either stand-alone projects or in conjunction with other FDOT projects.
