US 1 / SR-878 Intersection Sub-Area Traffic Study
May 3, 2011 · Traffic OperationsThis study, undertaken by DPA, was intended to develop strategies to alleviate the traffic congestion along US-1 in the vicinity of the SR 878 interchange. This was done by evaluating current and future traffic conditions in the immediate and surrounding areas. The study area consisted of the US-1 corridor from SW 70 Avenue to SW 62 Avenue.
An evaluation of the existing morning, midday, and afternoon peak hour traffic conditions was conducted with the aid of the traffic simulation software Synchro / SimTraffic. The program allows detailed analysis of base traffic conditions that can then be used to evaluate the impacts and benefits of alternative strategies and / or improvements.
Future travel demand in the study area was estimated using the Miami-Dade County Transportation Model, committed development projects in the area, and historic traffic growth patterns. A number of transportation improvements and strategies were identified to reduce congestion along the subject corridor. They were classified into several major categories, such as: physical improvements requiring construction; operational improvements; and other multimodal / management options. Given the complexity and degree of congestion in this area, a combination of techniques were recommended. In addition, DPA provided the estimated costs and benefits for the recommended strategies.
